Internet map applications
Digital maps now convey all sorts of information to a given user via the internet. They are practical navigational aids for all kinds of goals and contents: addresses and route, services, events and places of interest, photos and travel reports, etc.

Advantage:
Digital maps now convey all sorts of information to a given user via the internet. They are practical navigational aids for all kinds of goals and contents: addresses and route, services, events and places of interest, photos and travel reports, etc.
Mobile applications
These are space-related services that are used with mobile devices. Another term for them is Location Based Service (LBS). We at WIGeoGIS understand mobile applications such that the corresponding current whereabouts of a user (with a mobile device) is taken into account in providing information. Mobile devices are mobile telephones, smartphones, tablet PCs, automobile navigation systems, and voice services that are used with mobile telephones, for example. For determining the current location at any given time, the methods of cell localisation (via the network operator for SIM card-based devices) or GPS (for smartphones, tablet PCs or navigation systems) are applied.

Advantage:
LBS´s take whereabouts into account and can thereby reduce contents to the corresponding location. Space is thereby an additional selection criterion for reporting. This is sensible and increases the attractiveness of mobile applications.
Route calculation
Route calculation is an optimisation problem that involves finding an optimised route between two or more points while taking particular data into account.
Digital street networks are thereby used. Optimisation criteria can be path or time, for instance. Confounding variables such as motorised vehicle bans or imperatives, limitations (traffic jams, barriers, construction sites) or stops along the path to the destination, are taken into account.
Digital street networks that also contain attributes such as speed, street name, etc.—known from automobile navigation systems—form the basis for route calculation. Under the WIGeoAPI framework, web programmers have available to them powerful and simultaneously flexible route calculation that can be used for a wealth of applications.

Advantage:
The determination of travel times and distances between n points (e.g., for distance matrices), determination of the fastest/shortest paths, basis for route planner.
